Newly released figures show the Port of Los Angeles had its busiest month during September since August of 2008.

Overall cargo volume also increased 9% compared to September 2013, totaling 775,133 twenty-foot equivalent units. The increased volume reflects peak season volumes and larger vessels calling at the facility, according to port management.

Container imports increased 11%, from 370,786 TEUs in September 2013 to 411,507 TEUs last month. Exports rose .20%, from 150,380 TEUs in September 2013 to 150,679 TEUs in September 2014.

Combined, total loaded imports and exports increased 7.9%, from 521,166 TEUs in September 2013 to 562,185 TEUs last month. Factoring in empties, which increased 12.2% from the same time a year ago, overall September 2014 volumes of 775,133 TEUs rose 9% compared to 710,892 TEUs a year earlier.

For the first nine months of 2014, overall volume was 6,302,470 TEUs, an increase of 7.8% compared to the same period in 2013 when there were 5,847,167 TEUs.

Figures for the nearby Port of Long Beach has yet to be released. Together the facilities handle about 40% of all U.S. imports.
