From October to November, the amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry rose 0.1% following a one month decrease, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics' (BTS) Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI).
The Freight TSI is a seasonally adjusted index that measures changes from the monthly average of the base year of 2000. The index measures the output of the for-hire freight transportation industry including trucking, rail, inland waterways, pipelines and airfreight.
According to the BTS, shipments in November 2011 were at the second highest level since July 2008. The highest level since then was in September 2011. July 208 was followed by six straight months of decline. After falling to a recent low in April 2009, freight shipments increased in 21 of the past 31 months, rising 16.1%.
For the first 11 months of 2011, freight shipments were up 2.4%. In the long-term, freight shipments are up 2.1% from November 2006 and 12% from November 2001.
The December index will be released on Feb. 8.
