Several improvements to make cargo move faster through the Port of Savannah, Georgia, are in the works.

According to the Savannah Morning News, port officials have been spending a lot of time calming down frustrated truckers waiting in long lines at the Garden City Terminal’s gate, along with meeting with prospective new shippers and working on upgrading the authority's computer system.
The container business is growing so fast that the corrugated boxes are practically busting out of the authority's penned-in lots, reported the Morning News. Experts say a combination of increased consumption in the U.S., along with an increased reliance on foreign-made products and components, has been driving the increase in container use.
The Georgia Port Authority finished out the fiscal year by moving 12.1 million tons of cargo, 494,127 more tons than fiscal year 1999. They raked in revenues of $88.2 million and earnings of $2.9 million, compared to $89.1 million and $4.5 million in last year.
