As trucking fleet duty cycles continue to blur the lines between traditional regional and linehaul operations, Goodyear is preparing to roll out a new steer tire designed specifically for what it calls the growing “super-regional” segment.

At the Technology & Maintenance Council Annual Meeting in Nashville, Heavy Duty Trucking stopped by the Goodyear booth for a preview of its upcoming Endurance SRS (Super Regional Steer) tire, a product aimed at fleets whose operations don’t fit neatly into traditional tire categories.

A Segment That Keeps Evolving

The emergence of the super-regional category reflects broader shifts in freight movement. There are more and more regional operations today, partly because truck drivers are less willing to stay on the road for weeks at a time.

But at the same time, the line has been blurring between regional haul and linehaul.

These trucks might travel 500 miles in a day, predominantly on-highway, but they still deal with stopping, starting, turning, and the scuffing of city driving, Goodyear says.

That mixed-duty cycle creates a challenge for tire design. Linehaul tires are optimized for fuel efficiency and long, steady runs, while regional tires are built to withstand scrub and turning. Super-regional operations demand both.

It’s a fine balance between wear, fuel economy, and durability.

Tire Designed for Mileage and Scrub Resistance

According to information displayed at the booth, Goodyear's Endurance SRS incorporates several features aimed at extending tread life while maintaining even wear:

  • Advanced tread compound to resist wear in higher-scrub applications
  • Rib-edge sipes designed to promote even wear and longer removal miles
  • Enhanced 20/32-inch tread depth for higher mileage in regional routes
  • Pressure distribution grooves to help manage shoulder wear

The goal, Goodyear said, is to deliver long miles to removal without sacrificing resistance to irregular wear.

Fleets Driving Demand

The concept is a direct result of fleet feedback. Customers have told Goodyear that they need a tire that fits between traditional regional tires and linehaul tires.

While Goodyear has not officially announced availability, the tire already has undergone extensive development and testing.
