The Houston city council is moving closer to banning big rigs from the left lane of I-10 during the day.

The ban on trucks with three or more axles would affect trucks traveling along a section of Interstate 10 on the east side of the city from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. The fine for violating the ordinance, likely to be approved next month, would be $200, according to the Associated Press.
Thirty-one deaths, about 14% of all Houston traffic fatalities last year, occurred in big-rig accidents, according to officials. The normal rate is about 5%. Houston police have upped truck inspections in response.
