Snow and freezing rain closed highways and caused accidents in the Northeast, East and Midwest Friday.
A blanket of snow covered the Northeast on Thursday, then was topped by freezing rain Friday. As temperatures climbed, slush and high water were added to the equation.
Ice forced the closing of a 20-mile stretch of Interstate 87 north of Albany, NY, while slick roads caused two pileups on interstate ramps near Parsippany, NJ. Route 79 South in Butler County, PA, was closed for hours Thursday night after a truck jackknifed on the slippery highway.
Snow accumulation in Detroit has totaled more than 23 inches this year – more than at any time in nearly 100 years. The city has been criticized for its inability to clear the roads.
The temperatures are supposed to warm up this weekend in much of the region, but warmer temperatures could mean flooding.
