If bolts damage the hydrogen tank, it increases the risk of a leak, which increases the risk of a fire, notes the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in its recall notice.
Lack of proper process control at assembly station in the plant allowed for incorrect bolt use. The affected FCEV Nikola trucks were produced between August 30, 2023, and September 16, 2024.
Vehicle monitoring and safety systems are designed to detect hydrogen tank leaks with audible and visual warnings. Nikola is not aware of any leaks associated with this issue.
Dealers will inspect and replace the bolts, and replace the hydrogen tank as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed March 15, 2025.
Fix for Nikola BEV Recall Still Ongoing
Meanwhile, according to a Jan. 31 report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, as of the end of 2024, Nikola still had nearly 100 battery-electric trucks subject to a 2023 battery-pack recall that had not yet been repaired.
Nikola announced the fix for the recall of 209 trucks last summer, and since then, 111 have been repaired, according to the report, leaving 98.
As a result of that recall, Nikola switched battery suppliers and started using a completely new battery design.
Nikola recently announced that it is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Even following a bankruptcy, according to Consumer Reports, companies are still responsible for addressing safety recalls.
Owners may contact Nikola customer service at 630-808-4531. Nikola's number for this recall is 24VDC1101.
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 888-275-9171) or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
