An expansion of Interstate 99 in Unionville, Pa., is expected to reduce the number of big rigs traveling a narrow and often shoulderless section of two-lane Route 220, and residents can't wait.

According to Associated Press reports, as a result of the construction, which should be complete in three to four years, complaints about unsafe conditions on the section of the old road between Martha Furnace and Milesburg have cooled off -- at least, until recently.
Since federal funding for the improvements to the road are tapped out, residents are pushing local government for action. Further adding to local complaints are recent reports that state planners expect only half of the truck traffic will actually use I-99, prompting residents to demand a truck ban on the old road.
The state Department of Transportation is holding a public meeting on Route 220 safety concerns on August 14.
