A $125 million renovation project launched in 1994 by the Georgia Department of Transportation to rebuild and renovate 20 rest areas and nine welcome centers has led to the major reconstruction of 17 rest areas and three welcome centers.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the project has resulted in more truck parking at every new facility, allowing more truckers to take naps during hours of operation.
In addition, travelers can look forward to new welcome centers along I-985, two more along I-95 on the coast, as well as a new rest area on I-16 near Metter.
Since some of the state’s rest areas have garnered reputations as meeting places for illicit sex and drug activity, several facilities will be closed and torn down. They will be replaced by new facilities elsewhere in the state, said the article.
