A new Route 29 tunnel scheduled to open next month in Trenton, N.J., will not be an option for trucks.
According to the Associated Press, the tunnel links Route 29 with Interstates 95, 195 and 295 in a beltway system designed to reduce rush-hour congestion. The state has touted the project as a way to take trucks off local roads.
However, Transportation Commissioner James Weinstein Jr. signed a temporary order earlier this month banning trucks, saying it's an extension of restrictions already in place on Route 29 north of I-95.
Trucks weighing more than 13 tons cannot use Route 29 between the I-95 interchange and the Rout 1 overpass, unless they have deliveries within 3 miles. The ban completely forbids trucks of more than 13 tons from between the overpass and Route 129.
